In March, 2024, I gave a talk to the local U3A (University of the 3rd Age) in Whittlesey, where I’m a member. The subject was “Unleashing Your Dreams… how to make them come true,” based on my book “Unleash Your Dreams: Going Beyond Goal Setting”.
I think I entertained the audience and gave them something to think about, even if I didn’t get to sell any of my books.

March Open Meeting

Unleashing your dreams... and how to make them come true

Stephen Oliver

Stephen is “one of our own”, a member of Whittlesey U3A, a celebrated author and as it turns out, quite the stimulating and encouraging speaker.

His talk at Childers for our March Open Meeting left many of us with a feeling of “It is never too late to achieve your dreams”.

An interesting man, he has had various careers such as software engineer, an NLP practitioner, adult educator and prize winning author. For today’s talk, he focused on the subject of his first published book, which in turn came from a course he developed.

I admit that prior to Stephen’s talk, my main goal was to put my knickers on in the morning without falling over, but he made me think about what I would really like and need in my life. Many of us reach a certain stage in our lives and think that we have perhaps “missed the boat” regarding some of the dreams we once had. This is most definitely not the case for Stephen.

By following a few simple steps, he believes we can realise so much more than we thought.

Stephen suggested we all need goals, as this gives us focus and helps us pay attention to what is happening to us.

Of course, lots of people don’t set themselves goals as a general rule. They are too overwhelmed by the prospect, they fear failure, or indeed success and give up at the first sign of difficulties.

He showed us how we could overcome these problems by writing down everything we wish to achieve and using this to discover what we really do want. Keep looking at this and use it as an affirmation and focus on positive beliefs and improvements. He explained that, as you approach your goals, you move the goalposts and drive forward.

Goals and dreams won’t be realised overnight, but he believes a few small steps and a change to our way of thinking can have amazing benefits. He made it sound doable for anyone and how it is really possible to train yourself to be happy.

As Stephen claims, the only limit to what you can attain is your imagination and commitment.

If you feel this is something you would like to pursue, Stephen’s book can guide you through it step by step.
